Kenosha’s John Pallin advanced to the second round of match play at the 55th U.S. Senior Amateur on Monday at Beverly Country Club in Chicago.

After shooting an even-par 142 total (73-69) at the 36-hole qualifier Saturday and Sunday to earn a spot into the 64-player match play field, Pallin, the No. 4 seed, defeated No. 61 seed Bill Leonard of Downers Grove, Ill. 5 and 4 in Monday’s first round.

Pallin will face No. 29 seed Graham Cooke of Canada in a second-round match at 8:47 this morning. The third round will follow in the afternoon, with the quarterfinals and semifinals on Wednesday and championship match on Thursday.

Schaap one back

Kenosha’s Todd Schaap shot a 4-under 68 and is in second place, one shot behind leader Miles McConnell (67), heading into today’s final round of the WSGA Director’s Cup at The Club at Strawberry Creek.

After going out in even-par 36, Schaap birdied Nos. 11, 12, 14 and 17 to come in with a 4-under 32. He also made 14 pars.

McConnell, a Fitchburg resident, started birdie-eagle and shot a 5-under 31 on the front nine. His lone mistake was a bogey on the par-4 18th.

Other Kenosha County players competing in the tournament for amateurs 25-and-older were: Dan Sitzberger (73, tie for 13th), Daniel Mueller (76, tie for 25th), Jamie Young (78, tie for 39th), Scot Yehle (80, tie for 55th), Rick Stettner (82, tie for 66th) and Rob Warmouth (86, tie for 82nd).

Today’s final round will start at 8 a.m.

UW-P finishes sixth

The UW-Parkside golf team rebounded from a collective shaky round on Saturday with a solid 36 holes on Sunday to take sixth at the Al Watrous Memorial in Bay City, Mich.

The Rangers shot a three-round total of 8-over par 872 (301-287-284). Ferris State won the 10-team event at 27-under 837 (281-279-277).

Parkside’s Andy Hansen finished fifth overall with a 7-under 209 (72-68-69). Ferris State’s Eric Lilleboe shot a 202 for medalist honors.

Bob Tierney rebounded from an 82 on Saturday with a 75 and 68 for a 225 total. Keith Buntrock (75-73-74, 222), Jake Knuese (78-74-73, 225) and Mike Keller (76-72-78, 226) rounded out the scoring for Parkside.
