LaPlant’s 1,936 high in News qualifying
The qualifying scores continue to climb.
For the third night in a row, a new Men’s Division leader emerged in the 46th annual Kenosha News Match Game Bowling Tournament at Surfside Bowl.
Not one, but two bowlers surpassed Dave Sjuggerud’s Tuesday score of 1,927 on Wednesday night.
Dennis LaPlant rolled a 1,936 and Greg Brooks checked in with a 1,929.
LaPlant averaged 251 in his first four games with high games of 280 and 278. Brooks opened with games of 278 and 269 and averaged 254 in his final three games.
Jeff Jankowski (1,903) and Joel Oechler (1,897) turned in impressive scores and are sixth and seventh, respectively.
Bob Hanks (1,844) and Chris Grabot (1,827) also moved into the top 16.
Defending champion Brian Kaddatz, who entered the night clinging to the 16th spot at 1,731, was bumped. Grabot now holds the final position. Last year’s cut-off mark was 1,841.
Andrew Lovely, the 2005 champion, did not qualify. He finished with 1,810 on Wednesday.
Defending Women’s Division champion Tammy Pankonie turned in best score of the night — and third overall — with a 1,700.
Pankonie averaged 230 in her first four games after opening with a 279. Her score trails those turned in by the Monday duo of Stephanie DeFranco (1,721) and Nicki Bolyard (1,719).
Tracy Cowfer had a 1,661 on Wednesday and is fifth overall.
Other Wednesday bowlers currently in the top 16 are Laura Baumgarten (seventh, 1,616), Kelly Colmer (10th, 1,572) and Kathy Follak (16th, 1,554).
In the Senior Men’s Division, Steve Bingham (1,854) and David Meier (1,845) turned in the top scores of the night. They are currently fourth and fifth, respectively.
Tom Ruffalo still leads with a 1,906 and Gary Wolf (1,867) and Scott Thomas (1,859) are second and third, respectively.
Qualifying continues 6:30 tonight at Surfside and runs through Friday.
Seven others also made it into the top 16 on Wednesday with Carl Martens Sr. (1,803) the only one of that group to go over the 1,800 mark.
Phil Young (11th, 1,762) had the high game of the night with a 280.
In the Super Senior Men’s Division, Robert Chatman made it into the top eight with a six-game score of 1,195. That trails only James Mollman Sr. (1,333) and Dick Beltoya (1,245).
