Larsen: Things to watch for in rematch
Only so many adjustments can be made in a 10-day span, so here are four things to watch for in Saturday’s Bradford-Tremper playoff meeting:
1. Can Tremper control the clock? To keep Bradford’s explosive offense off the field, Tremper’s offense has to control the clock. The Trojans did a very good job of this in the first half last week, churning out first down after first down. The drives didn’t translate into points as Tremper was down 14-0 at the half, but the opportunities were there to score. If the Trojans repeat the feat, the opportunities will be there again.
2. Can Bradford’s secondary make a play on the ball? Even without Justin Otto, the Bradford secondary is oozing with athleticism. Cornerbacks Trae Waynes, Chris Chamness and Tylerr Ortiz along with safety Chris Millard can make the right covers and reads. But once the ball is in the air, the group needs to be better at avoiding pass interference penalties, knocking the ball down or collecting a pick.
3. Can the Tremper defense win one-on-one matchups? Bradford’s flexbone offense thrives on creating a one-on-one matchup between the ball carrier and one defender. Usually, the Red Devils’ ball carrier wins out. Coming off a good outing against Riverside, the Trojans’ linebacking corps needs to wrap up better than last week.
4. Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. Against inferior opponents, Bradford is talented enough to turn the ball over and get away with it. Against Tremper, probably not.
And the Trojans overcame four turnovers against Riverside. If Tremper does that against Bradford, they don’t stand a chance.
Fantasy flash
n Must start: Steven Jackson. The Rams running back has been putting up consistent low No. 1 RB numbers despite not getting into the end zone. He’s had three straight games of 100-plus total yards and three 100-yard rushing games on the season. n Bust: Adrian Peterson. A disclaimer … this doesn’t mean sit him. Just temper expectations for the best player in fantasy football at Green Bay. In the first game against the Pack, Peterson was held to a season-low 55 yards and a TD. In his two previous games at Lambeau Field, he had a total of 148 yards rushing with one touchdown. n Sleeper: Beanie Wells. Those of you who saved a roster spot for the rookie from Ohio State from draft day, will be rewarded in Week 8. Wells took a majority of the carries after Tim Hightower’s fumble woes last week and will build on that against Carolina’s 26th-rated rush defense.
Book it
Baltimore kicker Steven Hauschka was secretly an undercover agent working against my “Book it” two weeks ago as the Vikings survived to drop my record to 25-23. This week, the Phillies will repeat as World Series champions.
