Locals should know what to expect in Madison
Inexperience won’t be a problem for David Carswell, Tremper’s top singles player, when the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division-1 Boys Individual Tennis Championships convenes at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison today.
The same is true for teammate Tomas Goldsmith and Bradford’s Anthony Greco.
Each will be making a return trip to the meet, which is being held on the campus of the University of Wisconsin.

Carswell is making his third trip in as many years while Goldsmith and Greco are returning with new doubles partners. Goldsmith will be teaming with Connor Hildebrandt while Greco’s partner is Ron Palmen.
Other County representatives are Tremper singles player Jake Humphreys and, in Division-2, the St. Joseph doubles team of Harry Feuerbach and Ryan Aschenbrener.
The tournament continues with matches through the quarterfinal round on Friday. Champions will be crowned Saturday.
Not only does Carswell has experience at State, he has experienced success there.
Last year, Carswell, who was seeded 11th, won his first two matches before bowing to Madison East’s Jonathan Schwerin of Madison East, 6-2, 6-4.
Carswell earned his first State victory last year by outlasting Sheboygan South’s David Kieckhafer 7-6(1), 6-1.
Carswell will take a 23-6 record into today’s first round match against seeded Ben Purman of Hartford.
Purman, a senior, is 19-5 and is seeded 10th (the first eight players are seeded while the next eight players are seeded alphabetically by school).
The Carswell-Purman winner will face the survivor of the match between Marshfield senior John Coleman (14-8), a special qualifier, and Milwaukee King sophomore Holden Sherer (22-4).
Carswell advanced to State by taking second at last week’s sectional. Carswell finished behind Racine Horlick’s Jeff Lotz, whom he had defeated for the Southeast Conference championship the previous Saturday.
Lotz (22-1), a senior seeded 15th, and Carswell will have to wait to the championship match Saturday to renew their rivalry.
Humphreys and Goldsmith and Hildebrandt advanced to State by winning championships at sectional.
Humphreys, a freshman, is 27-2. He opens against special qualifier Ryan Denu of Brookfield Central.
The senior is 27-0 and joins defending champion and top seed Billy Bertha (22-0), a senior from Milwaukee Marquette, and 2007 state champion and No. 2 seed Nelson Vick (13-0), a junior from Marquette, as the only undefeateds in the Division-1 field.
Goldsmith, a senior, and Hildebrandt, a sophomore, will tote a 22-2 mark to Madison. The pair opens against Appleton North seniors Tyke Pierce and Mike Smongeski at 2 p.m. today. The winner of that match will play the winner of the match between Eau Claire Memorial’s Florent Marco and Ryan VandeLinde (15-5) and Monona Grove’s Aaron Kondrasuk and Korbinian Enzinger, who are seeded at 8-1, on Friday.
Goldsmith went to State last year with senior Matt Tithoff where they dropped a first round match to Madison West’s Bennett Mortensen and Ian LaPhilliph 6-1, 6-3.
Greco, a junior, and Palmen, a senior, made State as special qualifiers. The duo is 7-4 and will play Brookfield East’s Brad Lojewski and Nick Engstrand (13-12) in a first round match today.
Greco made State last year with senior Brenden Bisciglia. The duo dropped their first round match to Eau Claire Memorial’s Ryan Falch and Jeff Liegel 6-3, 7-5.
In Division-2, today’s match will be just the eighth of the season for St. Joseph’s Feuerbach, a junior, and Aschenbrener, a senior.
Feuerbach is the Lancers’ No. 1 singles player while Aschenbrener is the No. 2 singles player.
They moved to doubles for the postseason to increase their chances of going to State and it worked. Feuerbach and Aschenbrener qualified for State by taking fourth at sectional. Their performance at sectional included an upset of the top seeded team.
Feuerbach and Aschenbrener (4-3) open against Edgerton seniors Ben Fuder and Chad Prater at 8 tonight.
