Marquette rallies past Oak Creek
KENOSHA NEWS CORRESPONDENT
WAUWATOSA — Some words to the wise for the Bradford football team and its followers: Don’t get overconfident if you get a lead against Marquette.
Marquette, ranked second among Large Division schools (enrollment of 744 and up) by the Associated Press, made up for a horrible second quarter with a dominating second half as it rallied to beat Oak Creek 35-28 in a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 1 second-round game at wind-swept Hart Park on Saturday afternoon.

Top-seeded Marquette (11-0) will play second-seeded Bradford (11-0) Friday or Saturday most likely at Indian Trail Stadium.
It looked like it might be a rout as Greater Metro Conference champion Marquette scored two touchdowns in 14 seconds to take a 14-0 lead with 4 minutes, 54 seconds to play in the first quarter. Senior quarterback Kevin Fink threw a short pass for the first score and senior linebacker Henry Kuranz picked up a fumble on the kickoff and ran 28 yards for another score.
In a stunning turn of events, Oak Creek (7-4) scored 28 points in the second quarter to put Marquette behind at the half for only the second time all season. Oak Creek junior quarterback Kyle Veloz ran up the middle for 18 yards and a touchdown, then threw a touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Reymond Overland, and two to junior wide receiver Joey Gribble, the second as time ran out in the first half.
Marquette coach Dick Basham, in his 38th season, must have made a heck of a halftime speech.
“Coaches were telling us to stay confident, that we shouldn’t have been in the position we were in, you knew we had the talent to get out of it,” Fink said. “While there was some yelling, the main message was that we can do this, and we have to go out and punch them in the mouth and we can stay confident and come back in the second half.”
The Hilltoppers used their running game to set up two Fink TD passes to get even in the third quarter. With 4:57 to go, senior tailback Brock LaFace, who ran for 89 yards on 17 carries in the second half (115 yards on 25 carries overall), scored the winning touchdown on a 2-yard run off right tackle.
Oak Creek went three and out on its lone possession in the third quarter. Marquette had 22 snaps in the third quarter and ran 42 plays in the second half. Oak Creek ran 11.
