Marran: A little help, please!
The recent action of the City Council and mayor got me to thinking: If trick-or-treat can be moved, why can’t the council and other governmental bodies take action in the world of sports?
Here are a few events that could use some “government intervention”: n Rivalry games: The City Council and Kenosha County Board would do the prep football community a huge favor by urging high schools to schedule their rivalry games on separate dates.
This year, Bradford and Tremper and Central and Wilmot square off on Wednesday, Oct. 21, which will deprive fans of taking in both spectacles. n Food, Folks & Spokes: The council could give the annual cycling and food festival a boost by requiring local businesses to take their employees to lunch at the summer’s top local event.
This would be a great way to expose a sensational and world-class event to a fresh set of eyes. n Friday Night Lights: The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association should pass a resolution giving Friday nights solely to high school football.
Who are we kidding? Football is the most popular high school sport and dwarfs the other events that are held on Fridays. n County Open: Every year, the Men’s County Open gets lost in the summer shuffle.
Whether it is overshadowed by the Danskin Triathlon; Food, Folks & Spokes; or softball, the County Open always has trouble getting traction, particularly on its first two days of play.
A motion shifting the county’s top golf event to a lighter weekend would probably be welcomed by local linksters. n Packers-Bears: The lawmakers in Green Bay and Chicago should hammer out a joint resolution demanding the NFL’s best rivalry open and close every season.
Can you think of a better way to start and finish a season around here? n Baseball: Congress can do us all a favor by mandating that the World Series end in October.
Baseball played in November increases the chances that weather, and not the game, will determine the winner.
Should a World Series champion be decided by which team can best handle the frigid conditions?
Heck, maybe the mandate should be earlier. Saturday’s National League Division Series game in Denver was postponed because of cold weather. n Baskeball/Hockey: Congress could also mandate that no professional basketball or hockey games be played after Memorial Day.
This would mercifully shorten two too-long seasons. n Your thoughts: If you have suggestions on this topic, send them to me at the e-mail address below.
