Martens, Kaddatz 1-2 in Senior Men
Carl Martens Sr. rolled a division-high eight-game pinfall of 1,936 and was the only bowler to go 7-1 on Sunday night at Surfside Bowl.
But a familiar name is lurking right behind him in the Senior Division of the 46th annual Kenosha News Match Game Tournament.
With 546 points, Martens holds a 75-point lead over second-place Tom Kaddatz (471), the Senior Men’s champion in 2006 and 2007, entering Wednesday night’s second half of finals.
Bowlers received 30 points for each match victory and plus/minus one point for each pin over/under 200.
Martens, who finished eighth in last week’s qualifying, averaged a division-best 242 Sunday night. His best games were a 299 in Game 6 and 276 in Game 1, and his lowest was a 203 in Game 7.
Kaddatz, who tied for ninth at qualifying, posted a 5-3 record and averaged 240 en route to a 1,921 pinfall. His best games were a 299 (Game 5) and a 279 (Game 8), and his lowest was a 194 (Game 4).
Steve Bingham went 6-2 and rolled an 1,868 pinfall to put himself in third with 448 points. Bill Harris (5-3, 390) and Dave Meier (5-3, 378) rounded out the top five.
Defending champion Steve Stone is in eighth with 341 points. Despite posting the third-highest pinfall (1,881) of the night, Stone won only two of eight matches.
Tom Ruffolo, the top qualifier, finished 3-5 and is in 14th with 97 points.
The tournament will continue tonight at 6:30 with the first night of finals for the Women’s and Super Senior Men’s divisions.
