More sectional success
With another sectional championship out of the way, Bradford’s Karyn Guttormsen is ready for another shot at a WIAA Division-1 State title.
Guttormsen (29-1) extended her win streak to 16 matches and represented one of three local flights to secure a spot at the WIAA State Individual Tennis Tournament Oct. 15-17 at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
A two-time State qualifier and a potential top-four seed at State, Guttormsen pulled off a three-set victory over Tremper’s Megan Humphreys in the No. 1 singles final. Humphreys, a freshman, earned a State berth with a second-place finish at No. 1 singles while the Trojans’ No. 1 doubles team of Jenna Humphreys and Brianna Riley qualified with a third-place showing.

The top-four finishers at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, along with the champions at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles automatically advanced to State.
The WIAA will announce an additional 16 special qualifiers in singles and doubles on Saturday.
Divine Savior Holy Angels, ranked second in the latest Division-1 Wisconsin High School Tennis Coaches Association poll, won the sectional with 43 points and earned a spot in the WIAA State Team Tournament on Oct. 23-24 in Madison.
Brookfield Central was second with 39, Tremper was third with 35, Brookfield East was fourth with 24 and Bradford was fifth with 22.
Central tied for sixth with 14 points.
The Trojans were left out of the State Team Tournament for the second straight year. Tremper won five straight sectional titles from 2003-07.
“DSHA is headed to State and they deserve it,” Tremper co-coach Tom Pacetti said.
“They’re ranked second in the state for a reason. We played great tennis and got beat. We didn’t beat ourselves.
“DSHA is just at another level than we are.”
Guttormsen, a sophomore, knocked off DSHA’s Gina Balisteri, 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals before pulling away from Humphreys, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the final. It was the third time in the two weeks the County rivals squared off.
“Megan fought really hard,” Bradford coach Kevin Guttormsen said.
“She had our backs against the wall. I told Karyn she had to bring it and she turned it up a couple notches.”
Humphreys defeated Brookfield East’s Bridget Naack, 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and knocked off Brookfield Central’s Nicole Spiel, 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals.
“We’re so pleased with Megan,” Pacetti said. “She just puts a smile on your face watching her play. She already lost to (Naack and Spiel) earlier this season and she just went out and dominated both of them.”
Tremper’s No. 1 doubles team of Jenna Humphreys and Riley knocked off Megan Sakesfski and Reina Maruko of New Berlin Eisenhower, 6-4, 7-5 before falling to Brookfield East’s Sophie Carr and Katelyn Kotch, 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Humphreys and Riley then defeated Brookfield Central’s Jenna Oimoen and Sara Strohmaier, 7-6(4), 6-2 in the third-place match.
Bradford’s Trina Capelli lost to Brookfield Central’s Jessica Tang in the No. 2 singles’ final. Capelli is a strong candidate for a special qualifier, according to Kevin Guttormsen.
