A peek inside the Sports Editor’s cyber- and e-mailbag:

The column I wrote about Chicago’s doomed bid for the 2016 Olympics prompted two “interesting” responses.

* ‘GE’ from kenoshanews.com: “As someone who saw team handball in Beijing last summer, I say forget Chicago. They don’t deserve it and frankly I’d rather go to (Rio de Janeiro) or (Madrid) Spain than have to deal with the Windy City’s traffic or people.”

* Comment: Wouldn’t all the handball fans simply add to the congestion in Rio or Madrid?

One reader did not buy my argument that the snubbing of American-made and American-loved softball by the International Olympic Committee was bad news for Chicago’s bid. The comment to me was entitled “softball argument on softball.”

* RLA from kenoshanews.com: “So ... a bunch of potheads playing softball then running down to (a restaurant) when they get the munchies is supposed to cement the sport in the American consciousness? I dunna think so, laddy. ... Chicago has enough problems without losing money on the Olympics. My hopes go to Rio — a little international spotlight on what they do to the children down there might put a stop to the horror.”

* Comment: That brand of softball would certainly make the stop at second base — where the keg usually is in some games — interesting, wouldn’t it? The trip home would probably be more interesting, come to think of it.

* JG Kruse via e-mail: “Glad to see that ESPN got rid of Tony Kornheiser and replaced him with Jon Gruden because anybody has to be better than Kornheiser or Dennis Miller from years gone by. Jon Gruden is at least a very knowledgeable football person, something that Miller and Kornheiser aren’t. I look forward to watching ESPN football for the ’09-’10 season.”

* Comment: Kruse, aka “The Dog,” frequently expresses his opinion to me on announcers. This is the first time I can remember the loyal reader actually expressing hope and optimism over a broadcaster. I hope Gruden doesn’t let him down!

* ‘D’ from kenoshanews.com: “Let me ask the Bear fans a question: When (Jim McMahon) finished his career in Green Bay did (you) run out and get a McMahon Packers jersey? I suspect the answer is a resounding NO.”

* Comment: Actually, it is a resounding YES from me. I may be the only person in the world (other than Mrs. McMahon) who has a Jim McMahon Packer jersey. When “Jimmy Mac” joined the Pack, it basically signalled the end of my Bear fandom and that was my way of expressing it.

Based on some of the responses we received on Brett Favre’s move to the archrival Vikings, some around here are dealing with similar feelings. ‘D’s’ response is part of our Favre reaction package on page C7.
