News bowling qualifying wraps up
Six bowlers joined the finals fray Friday during the final night of qualifying for the 46th annual Kenosha News Match Game Tournament at Surfside Bowl.
While no one was able to crack the finals field in the Men’s and Super Senior Men’s divisions, the Women’s and Senior Men’s field got three new finalists apiece.
Defending champion Julie Kunath had a high game of 242 en route to an eight-game block of 1,699 pins to put her sixth in the Women’s Division field of 12.
Two-time champion Kelly Pobloski (1998, 2001) was consistent from start to finish with a high game of 257 to vault atop the Women’s leaderboard with a 1,732. Jenny Limbach started with a 269 and finished with the second-highest qualifying total in the Women’s field at 1,727.
Getting bumped from the field were Kim Roe, Sharon Schulz and Kelly Colmer. Roe and Schulz will serve as alternates.
Jerry Elsen began his night with a 736 series (244, 234, 258) and his 1,862-pin total over eight games slotted him into third place in the Senior Men’s Division. Jim Gentile (1,782) and Jerry Martin (1,780) also qualified for the finals.
Bumped from the field were Bill Valenti, Michael Scherr and Jerry Streich. Valenti and Tom Vena, who rolled a 1,724 Friday, will serve as alternates.
In the Men’s Division, Jason Griffin and Adam Jurgens will be alternates. In the Super Senior Men’s Division, Dick Smith and Bud Meehan are the alternates.
Each division features a two-day finals competition.
The Senior Men begin on Sunday and wrap up Wednesday. The Women’s and Super Senior Men’s Division begin on Monday and finish on Thursday. The Men’s Division starts Tuesday and closes out the tournament next Friday. The Senior Women’s Division was eliminated this season because of a lack of entrants.
