No. 1 Red Devils remain unbeaten
Alyssa Roberts tossed a four-hit shutout as the top-ranked Bradford softball team continued its marathon week Wednesday with a 2-0 victory over Homestead at Thiensville Village Park.
“Alyssa threw like a veteran today, using a variety of pitches to keep an aggressive hitting team guessing,” Bradford coach John P. Ruffolo said.
The Red Devils (17-0) got a double from Ari Roberts with one out in the fifth inning and she scored the first run on Cynthia Miller’s single. Sarah Swager plated Courtney Mercier with a two-out single in the sixth.
That would be all Alyssa Roberts needed. She walked two and struck out six to improve to 9-0.
Homestead (16-4) got a solid outing from Bekah Rennicke, who allowed just five hits in seven innings. Rennicke walked none and struck out three.
The game was the second in a stretch of six road games in five days for the Red Devils. Bradford opened the stretch by blasting Racine Park 10-0 in six innings on Tuesday. Ali Brems (7-0) struck out 12 and allowed only two Panthers to reach (one walk, one hit). Mercier went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI. Swager went 2-for-3 with a RBI.
The Red Devils play at Tremper today in the Southeast Conference finale. Bradford, which already clinched its second consecutive SEC title earlier this month, beat Tremper 10-0 in six innings on April 23.
Wilmot’s Wood fans 20Kristen Wood set a school record with 20 strikeouts as Wilmot closed out its regular season with a 4-3, eight-inning victory over Muskego in non-conference action.
Wood allowed one earned run on four hits in the eight innings. The freshman walked just one and struck out 20 — including the side in the bottom of the eighth as the Panthers (16-2) won their ninth in a row.
Karli Dorn plated the tying run in Wilmot’s seventh inning. In the eighth, Bailie Sheahan drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Wood. Kelsey Saucerman followed with a grounder to short that plated the go-ahead tally.
Sheahan had a double and two RBI. Kelli Hutchinson also had a double.
According to Wilmot coach Bob Movrich, Wilmot received a first-round bye and will host the winner of the Central-Oregon game in a WIAA Division-1 regional final on Thursday.
Shoreland stumblesSloppy defense and lack of timely hitting did in Shoreland Lutheran in its 7-3 non-conference loss at Racine Horlick.
The Pacers (13-7) committed four errors, including three leading to six Rebels’ unearned runs in the fifth inning.
Shoreland loaded the bases in the fourth and sixth but didn’t score until a three-run seventh. Bekah Sittig had the Pacers’ two hits.
Shoreland’s Kathryn Marquardt (13-7), who went the distance, allowed four hits and seven runs (one earned) with four walks and six strikeouts.
“Marquardt threw a great game,” Pacers coach Tim Treder said. “We hope to build off that while continuing to reduce our errors and increase our offensive output.”
The Pacers play in the Southeast Wisconsin Showcase Tournament today at Case Eagle Park.
The tourney started on April 25, but was rained out after one game.
