Pallins combine for WSGA title
Kenosha’s John and Rocco Pallin won the Wisconsin Women’s State Golf Association Father-Daughter Championship for the second time in four years on Monday at Hartford Golf Club.
Playing an alternate-shot format, the Pallins fired a 4-under par 68 en route to a three-shot victory in Championship Flight.
The Kenosha Country Club members made 15 pars, a pair of two-putt birdies — after driving the green on a par-4 and hitting it in two on a par-5 — and one eagle when John Pallin holed a wedge shot from 53 yards on a par-4.
“We didn’t make any putts over 5 feet. Rocco drove the ball well overall and I hit a number of good drives, too, so overall we hit it well and didn’t make a lot of putts,” said John Pallin, who also finished second in the 2005 tournament while paired with his oldest daughter Sarah.
“It was fun. Rocco was happy about it. We had a real good time playing.”
The Pallins’ previous Father-Daughter victory came in 2006 when they shot a 70 at Western Lakes Golf Club in Pewaukee.
While John Pallin said he views the tournament as an enjoyable way to spend a day on the golf course with his daughter, he noted Rocco takes it more seriously.
“She looks at it like it’s something to win. She said, ‘We’re going to win,’ ” he said with a laugh.
The performance was the latest in a successful summer for Rocco Pallin, a former multiple-sport standout at Tremper who will begin her sophomore season this fall with the Dartmouth College track and field team.
In mid-July, she tied for sixth at the WWSGA/WWPLGA Stroke Play Championship and followed that up by winning the Ladies County Open for the third consecutive year, becoming only the second player in the tournament’s 28-year history to three-peat in Championship Flight.
“Her game has come around a lot this year,” John Pallin said.
“She’s been overall striking it well and her short game is better. Her iron game is pretty good all the time.
“She hits a lot of greens in regulation. She drives it far and when she drives it straight it’s a pretty easy game for her.”
Rimkus in fourth
Kenosha’s Jonathan Rimkus finished fourth in the boys 12-13 division in the Wisconsin PGA Junior Tour stop at Koshkonong Mounds Country Club in Fort Atkinson on Thursday.
Rimkus, who shot a 98 (49-49), tied for 29th overall.
Mitchell Johnson of Middleton was the overall winner with an even-par 71 (38-33).
