Parkside men, women both score victories in soccer
Spencer Bursten’s second goal of the season was a memorable one.
The UW-Parkside freshman scored off his own rebound in the fifth minute of double overtime as the Rangers edged Rockhurst, 2-1, in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match Friday at rain-soaked Wood Road Field.
“Man, that was a thrilling victory,” Parkside assistant coach Jason Zitzke said. “Rockhurst always has a top program. They graduated a lot of people, but it’s always special when you can beat them.”
Parkside, which improved to 8-3-2 in the GLVC (13-3-2 overall), opened the scoring in the 27th minute on a goal by Johnson Thao with an assist from Niklas Boedts. Rockhurst (8-9, 6-7) tied it in the 80th minute on a penalty kick.
“In the first half, we created a lot of scoring opportunities, but we either shot wide or right at their goalkeeper,” Zitzke said. “We were panicking and we weren’t very calm. We were calm on both of our goals.”
The Rangers outshot Rockhurst, 8-4.
Parkside hosts Drury 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
Women win, 3-0
The UW-P women’s soccer team scored three second-half goals in defeating Rockhurst, 3-0, in a GLVC game at Wood Road Field.
Parkside improved to 8-3-2 in the GLVC (9-3-3 overall) and clinched a spot in the conference tournament.
“We came out a little flat,” Parkside coach Troy Fabiano said. “We woke up in the second half.”
Crystal Chalery broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 57th minute on assists from Kristen Benson and Shannon Becker. The Rangers built a 2-0 lead on a goal from Kelly Teeters in the 78th minute and closed out the scoring with a goal from Jasmine Espino in the 80th minute.
“In the second half, we shared the ball much better and possessed it well,” Fabiano said. “In the first half, we were looking for that one killer ball.”
The Rangers outshot Rockhurst, 18-8.
Parkside hosts Drury in a GLVC match noon Sunday.
