Just call them the Comeback Kids.

One day after rallying from a 5-0 deficit, the Kenosha Legion Post 21 baseball team posted a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Union Grove Post 171 in a Lakes Area Legion game on Wednesday at Carthage.

The third-ranked Merchants (21-3, 10-0 LALL) scored a pair of runs in the first inning, but the Broncos took the lead with four unearned runs in the third off Kenosha starter Nathan Welch to take a 4-2 lead.

Post 21 scored three times in the fourth to grab the lead for good. Derek Binninger drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on the front end of a double steal with Jon Atkins, who had singled. After Dustin Proud was hit by a pitch, Brenden Schulz cleared the bases with a long double to left center that one-hopped the fence.

Welch (3-1) tossed a seven-hit complete game. He walked three and struck out four.

The Merchants next play in the Metro East Wood Bat Showcase Tournament of Champions in the St. Louis area this weekend. Post 21 plays pool play games today against Pekin (Ill.) Post 1232 at 5:30 p.m. and Alton (Ill.) Post 126 at 8 p.m.

Sports PT streaking

The Kenosha Sports PT team won its seventh game in a row with a 12-2 victory over the Post 21 Kenosha Twins in a U-19 Region 7 League game on Wednesday at Wavro Field.

Gino DeBartolo picked up the win after giving up one earned run on four hits in six innings. Batting cleanup, he also went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

With the game tied 2-2, Sports PT took control with four runs in the fifth inning and six in the sixth.

Leadoff hitter Chris Millard went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored and Dylan Neale went 2-for-3 with two RBI. John Stevens also drove in two runs and scored twice.

Defensively, Tyler Thomas made a diving catch in deep left center to save a run, and Brad Slomkowski made a sliding catch in right to take away a hit.

Alex Pencak took the loss in relief of Tyler Panasewicz. Brad Hughes and Nick Paura had RBIs for the Twins.

“They made a couple of great plays defensively or we could have scored a few more runs,” Twins coach Mike Tennyson said, “and then we had the worst night in the field that we’ve had this summer. We made a couple of mistakes that were just plain bad decisions. It was a much more competitive game than the final outcome. I’d love to have another shot at the last couple of innings.”

Kenosha Sports PT (12-3) will play at U-19 Delaven today.

U-16 Indians take second

The short-handed U-16 Kenosha Indians finished as the runner-up in the Great Lakes Championship over the weekend at Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill.

The Indians (11-3-1) went 5-1 in the tourney, winning three games on Saturday and going 2-1 on Sunday to earn a berth in the National Tournament.

After John Devito’s three-run home run helped give the Indians a 7-6 victory in the second game on Saturday, the Indians prevailed 10-9 in a wild third game against the Black Diamonds.

With the game tied 7-7, the tourney went to California rules, which puts a runner on second base and a 1-1 count on the batter. The Black Diamonds scored two runs in the top of the inning, but the Indians rallied for three, scoring the winning run on a suicide squeeze by Connor Furland.

The Indians suffered two costly injuries on Sunday. Torr Randau broke his hand when he was hit by a pitch and will be out for at least three weeks. Catcher Alec Letto left the championship game with a jammed thumb.

Leadoff batter D.J. Lewis (.474 avg.) led the offense, while Chris Langlie, Anthony Olson and Tanner Erbach provided solid pitching.

Merchants edge Bobcats

The U-17 Kenosha Merchants rallied for two runs in the seventh inning for a 13-12 victory over the U-16 Kenosha Bobcats on Tuesday at Simmons Field.

Adam Widder had a grand slam, Patrick Venn had two doubles and three RBI and Dustin Eschbach and Nick Wise chipped in two hits apiece for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats next play in the Diamond Sports World Series Qualifier at Concordia College in River Forest, Ill., today through Sunday.
