Carthage women’s basketball coach Tim Bernero knows that replacing seniors Lisa Gartelos, Shana Lieberman, Carlie Janowiak and Katie Jarger and their 3,643 points, 1,827 rebounds, 850 assists and 454 steals won’t be easy.

He’s off to a good start, though.

The Reds received some good news recently when Diana Jacklin announced that she is transferring to Carthage after spending two years at NCAA Division-1 Florida Gulf Coast University. The 6-foot Jacklin sat out her first year as a redshirt, so she will have three years of eligibility remaining.

“I had always loved Carthage,” Jacklin said in a telephone interview. “I always loved the campus. I know they have a great program, so I knew that’s where I wanted to be.”

Jacklin, the sister of former Carthage’s men’s basketball player Billy Jacklin (2005-08), was an All-State performer at Morton West High School in Berwyn, Ill.

“I couldn’t be more excited to have Diana join us here,” Bernero said. “She is an excellent all-around player who will fit in great with our returning players both on and off the court. She’ll have a very successful career at Carthage the next three years being a part of what we expect will be some very strong basketball teams.”

As a senior at Morton West, Jacklin averaged 22.2 points, 9.1 rebounds, 3.2 blocked shots, 3.0 steals and 2.1 assists per game.

Jacklin appeared in 20 games (two starts) for Florida Gulf Coast last season and averaged 2.9 points and 2.3 rebounds in eight minutes per game. The Eagles finished 26-5 and advanced to the second round of the WNIT.

“Diana is a very fluid athlete,” FGCU coach Karl Smesko said on the school’s Web site. “She has good size and runs the floor very well. She is a player who I see being very effective inside and on the perimeter.”

Jacklin said she has no regrets about leaving a Division-1 program and the tropical Florida weather.

“I’m actually looking forward to it,” she said. “Luckily, I like all of the seasons. Even though it’s going to be really cold, I really enjoy the snow.

“I know it’s going to be an adjustment, but I’m really excited.”

The same holds true for running up and down the floor in the new Tarble Arena.

“It’s amazing,” Jacklin said. “It looks great. I can’t wait to play in it.”
