Reds rake in the awards
The Carthage College volleyball team finished 7-0 en route to its fifth consecutive outright College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin title.
On Monday, the awards rolled in.
Senior libero Katie Lundgren was named CCIW Player of the Year for the second straight season while Leanne Ulmer was tabbed Coach of the Year when the conference released its postseason honors on Monday.
The eighth-ranked Reds (31-5) landed three players on the All-CCIW first team, one on the second team and one on the third team.
Joining Lundgren on the seven-player first team were sophomore outside hitter Michelle Madeja and junior right side hitter Rachel Swoboda, who on Saturday was named CCIW Tournament MVP. Sophomore setter Drewann Pancratz made the second team and sophomore outside hitter Lauren Dembkowski earned honorable mention.
“It’s good to see them get recognized for what they do,” Ulmer said. “The girls just did a fantastic job this year. We had a great run through the CCIW.
“I give the kids all the credit for that. It’s great to coach them.
“They’re fun to be around and it’s exciting ... to see our program get that kind of recognition.”
Ulmer earned top coach honors for the fourth consecutive season and fifth time since 2002.
“My girls keep making me look good,” Ulmer said. “It’s all about having talented girls.”
Lundgren, from Long Grove, Ill., has 739 digs on the season, while averaging nearly six digs per set. She also is tied for the team lead with 38 service aces.
Madeja (.227 attack percentage, 3.84 kills per set), Swoboda (.242, 2.11 kills and nearly one block per set), Pancratz (9.34 assists per set) and Dembkowski (2.98 kills per set) all earned a postseason award in 2008.
Urosevic honored
Carthage men’s soccer midfielder Aleks Urosevic earned a spot on the All-CCIW second team.
Urosevic, a sophomore from Skokie, Ill., had a team leading 13 points for the Red Men.
Elmhurst’s Brian McMahon and Wheaton’s Matt Swartz were named CCIW Co-Players of the Year. Elmhurst’s Dave Di Tomasso was named Coach of the Year.
Bringing the Funk
Carthage’s Tyler Funk earned his second consecutive CCIW Special Teams Player of the Week honor.
Funk, a senior from Racine Horlick, kicked a school-record 52-yard field goal in Carthage’s 55-24 victory over North Park on Saturday. It was the third weekly award on the season for Funk.
Millikin’s Luke Hockaday was the Offensive Player of the Week, while Illinois Wesleyan’s P.J. Cummings and North Central’s Joe Schneiderbauer shared defensive honors.
