Safransky ends Capps’ reign at Masters Tourney
Scott Safransky denied Jim Capps his third consecutive title in the eighth annual Kenosha Bowling Association Masters Tournament Sunday afternoon at Sheridan Lanes.
The tourney featured the top 16 all-event bowlers from the recently-completed KBA City Tournament.
Seeded fourth, Safransky edged second-seeded Ryan Yanel in the Division-1 championship match, 460-445.
Safransky finished with 2,215 pins in his nine games for a 246 average. He had a high game of 279.
After defeating No. 13 Tom Vena in the opening three-game match, Safransky scored a convincing 514-428 two-game victory over fifth-seeded Eric Prybylski in the second round.
Safransky then advanced to the final with a 537-473 victory over the eighth-seeded Capps, who was the two-time defending champion.
On the other side of the bracket, Yanel topped No. 15 Keith McGovern in the opening round and nipped seventh-seeded Barry Parker in the second round, 461-460. Yanel then advanced to the championship after slipping past 14th-seeded Jim Gentile in the semifinals, 456-451.
Yanel averaged 229 in his nine games. He had a high game of 267.
In Division-2, 11th-seeded Bryan Nevoraski defeated 13th-seeded Alex Shada, 432-400, in a close championship match.
Nevoraski averaged 215.8 in his nine games, while Shada averaged 215.9.
Shada had one of the highlights of the day with a perfect game in the third game of his match-play victory over fourth-seeded Pete Burditt.
In the semifinals, Nevoraski outlasted 10th-seeded Dave Sandoval, 407-364, while Shada pulled away from top-seeded Stan Johnson, 460-406.
Pankonie victorious
Tammy Pankonie captured the title in the 12th annual 700 Club Tournament recently at Guttormsen Recreation Center.
Pankonie rolled a four-game total of 909 on games of 233, 228, 216 and 232 to win the singles scratch and handicap divisions.
Liz Gentile took second place in scratch with a 897 series and 907 handicap total. Gentile rolled a 299 her last game, leaving a 10-pin on the final ball. Sue Millhouse was third with a scratch total of 883 and handicap total of 893.
Pankonie teamed with Julie Kunath (842) to win the scratch and handicap doubles with a 1,751. Pankonie and Kelly Pobloski (833) took second in the doubles scratch and handicap with a 1,742. Millhouse and Kunath finished third scratch (1,725) and Gentile and Kathy Follak were third in handicap doubles (1,736).
Honors
Matt Hanks sandwiched a 300 around games of 265 and 276 as part of a league-leading 841 series in the Miller Majors League at Surfside Bowl.
In the same league, A.J. Hedges fired a 290 high game to highlight a 767 series.
Rich Zutkowski rolled his first career 700 series on games of 278, 203 and 226 for a 707 series. Also in the Bowl A Matics League at GRC, Frankie DeBartolo spared the first frame and struck out for a 290 en route to a 773 series. Nicholas McNeish rolled a league-high 778 series.
