Shoreland finishes the job against Prairie
The Shoreland boys soccer team considered it unfinished business.
After playing to a 2-2 tie against Midwest Classic Conference rival Racine Prairie in the regular season, the Pacers finally settled the score with a 1-0 victory over the fourth-ranked Hawks in a WIAA Division-3 regional final Thursday in Racine.
Shoreland (17-5-4) will face third-ranked and top-seed Racine St. Catherine’s in a sectional semifinal Thursday at Pershing Park.
“We needed to finish a game that was really never completed,” Shoreland coach Dan Hahm said. “I’m sure (Prairie) felt the same way. We ended up getting the opportunity to complete it.”
Trent Schwartz scored the game’s lone goal on a penalty kick in the 43rd minute. The Pacers were awarded the penalty shot when Erik White beat his defender and was fouled inside the box by a second defender.
Schwartz capitalized with what stood as the game-winner.
“If I’m on the other side, I think it’s a tough one to swallow,” Hahm said. “It probably wasn’t the most malicious of fouls, but a foul is a foul.”
The Pacers overcame a couple prime scoring opportunities from the Hawks in the second half. Shoreland goalkeeper Randy Mills made a nifty, punch save on a dangerous free kick and freshman defender Adam Freitag came up with a save on a shot directly on goal.
“There were a couple situations where you wipe your forehead and breathe a sigh of relief,” Hahm said. “(Freitag) made a great play. It was a case of a young player being at the right place at the right time.”
Shoreland mustered just one shot in the first half, while Prairie didn’t record a single shot in the first 40 minutes. The Hawks outshot the Pacers, 4-3.
“It was really a battle within the midfield,” Hahm said. “When we went up on them, we became defensive minded and didn’t take chances on some of our runs. We stayed organized and played behind the ball.”
Shoreland ended its season last year against St. Catherine’s in the sectional semifinal. The Pacers lost to the Angels, 1-0, in the regular season.
