In going 21-2 last season, the Shoreland Lutheran girls basketball team seemingly always found a way to win.

A new season produced a different result right off the bat for the Pacers.

Lakeside Lutheran’s Alex Anthon sent the game to overtime with a late basket and Shoreland struggled to find the bottom of the basket in overtime in a 58-49 defeat.

The Warriors (1-0) returned most of their cast from a 15-5 campaign last season.

“We played a very good team to a standstill in their gym for four quarters,” Shoreland coach Bruce Heckmann said. “We just didn’t have any gas in the overtime.”

Dawn Grashen led Shoreland (0-1) with 17 points. Becky Engelbrecht (13) and Taylor Bahr (12) also broke double figures in scoring, but while the scoring and defense of Mindy Schalinske impressed Heckmann, there is still work to do.

“We did some good things offensively, but we didn’t compete on the glass very well,” Heckmann said. “That will be a big point of emphasis in practice.”

Anthon had 16 points to lead the Warriors. Three others scored in double figures — Jenna Lusier (12), Kayla Ridgeman (11) and Hannah Hackbarth (10).

Shoreland hosts Greendale Martin Luther next Tuesday.

Falcons 3-for-3

Central improved to 3-0 with a 55-41 non-conference win over East Troy in Paddock Lake.

Abbie Reeves and Faith Lois led the Falcons with 13 points apiece, while Cassie Cox and Margee Prokop chipped in eight and seven points, respectively.

“Just like our last game, we had pretty balanced scoring,” Central coach Dan Derler said. “We distributed the ball well and started hitting some shots.

“Defensively, we did a nice job throwing some different things at them and creating some confusion. If we can continue to do that, we can be a good team this year.”

Central will play 7:30 p.m. Friday at Racine Park.

CLS wins opener

Accurate long-distance shooting propelled host Christian Life to a 41-32 non-conference victory over Williams Bay.

The Eagles (1-0) made seven 3-pointers, including two each by Brie Tennyson (team-high 16 points) and Devyn Bedford (eight points).

Haley Johnson (seven points), Kathryn Adams (four points) and Katie Plowman (three points) also drilled 3-pointers.

“Our guards came through pretty tonight. Seven 3-pointers is a great way to start,” Christian Life coach Ruth Buehler said. “It’s not often a team scores more 3-pointers than 2s (six), but it’s a win and we’ll take it.”

Becca Hobbs scored a game-high 17 points for Williams Bay (0-1), but Christian Life’s Karissa Martin limited her to only two in the second half.
