So we meet again
GENOA CITY — There will be no love lost at Simmons Field tonight.
The Genoa City RedDogs earned a date with their bitter rival Kenosha Kings with a thrilling 3-2 victory in 10 innings over the West Allis Nationals in the second round of the Langsdorf League playoffs Thursday at Torstenson Field.
The Kings, the two-time defending Langsdorf champions, host the RedDogs at 7:30 tonight for a spot in a best-of-three league championship series beginning Tuesday against regular-season champion Racine Kiwanis.
“It’s going to be for bragging rights in the County,” said Genoa City manager Jude Tindall, a former Kenosha Kings’ player and coach. “They respect us and we respect them, but I don’t think we like each other too much.”
Kings’ manager Tim Pulizzano took in all 10 innings of the game and appeared to be more than pleased to get another shot at the RedDogs. The Kings (29-16) took two of three from Genoa City in the regular season.
“This is what we wanted,” Pulizzano said. “We have a nice little rivalry with them and we’re looking forward to it. There might be some fireworks.”
Genoa City (26-10) enters tonight’s game on a high note, coming off perhaps its best victory of the season. West Allis took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 10th before the RedDogs answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
With Genoa City down to its last out, former Tremper standout and Carthage player Drew Roberts delivered game-tying RBI triple to score Jim Sanew. Genoa City cleanup hitter Jade Boettcher then came through with a game-winning single to score Roberts.
Chad Tindall (1-0) pitched one inning in relief of starter Taylor Dowden and reliever Matt Sattersten. Dowden allowed five hits and one run over five innings before Sattersten gave up just two hits in four shutout innings.
“This was a great win,” Tindall said. “This is our fifth walk-off win of the year. It’s getting bad because we almost expect it now. They pitched great, we pitched great. It was one of the better games I’ve seen in a long time.”
West Allis starter C.J. Herrforth took a one-hit shutout into the seventh inning before Genoa City’s Tom Starck belted a double off the fence in left-center field and scored on an infield single from Matt Haley to tie it 1-1.
The Nationals took the lead in the 10th on a two-out RBI single from beefy third baseman Curt Pryal.
Starck, the ace of the Genoa City pitching staff, will start against the Kings. Kenosha will counter with right-hander Chad Ori. Ori took the loss against the RedDogs earlier this season.
“It should be a good game,” Jude Tindall said. “We feel pretty good with (Starck) on the mound.”
