The top-ranked Bradford softball team bounced back from its first loss of the season by winning two games and claiming the championship in the Southeast Showcase Tournament Saturday at Little League Park.

The eight-team tourney got under way on April 25, but was suspended because of rain after one game.

After losing to Illinois powerhouse Antioch 2-1 on Friday, Bradford had another tough test right off the bat on Saturday against defending WIAA Division-2 state champion New Berlin Eisenhower, which was ranked No. 3 in Division-2. Both teams entered the game with only one loss.

Bradford (20-1) prevailed 4-1 against the Lions and then blanked Germantown 5-0 in the title game.

In the first game, the Red Devils collected 10 hits off UW-Green Bay recruit Lauren Beres, who walked none and struck out 10.

Bradford’s Alyssa Roberts (10-0) pitched a five-hit complete game with two walks and two strikeouts.

“Alyssa kept the ball moving and we played a solid defensive game behind her,” Bradford coach John P. Ruffolo said. “It took a total team effort to keep their veteran lineup at bay.”

With the score tied 1-1, Bradford took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth.

Celena Perez led off with a single to left, Alyse Mikolas followed with an infield single and Ali Brems reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Beres struck out the next two hitters, setting the stage for Sarah Swager. With a full count and the runners in motion, Swager singled sharply to center to score two runs.

Bradford added an insurance run in the sixth when Mikolas scored on the front end of a double steal.

In the second game, Brems (9-0) tossed a three-hitter with no walks and 12 strikeouts. She struck out six of the first seven batters. Bradford did not strike out in the game.

Ari Roberts had an RBI single in the third and Perez had an RBI single in the fourth. The Red Devils put the game away with three in the sixth. Taylor Dodson drove in the first run with a triple to right center.

Lancers take two

Leslie Fletcher continued her standout season as St. Joseph swept a doubleheader from Living Word Lutheran 12-1 and 12-3 at Little League Park.

After pitching a three-hitter with two walks and eight strikeouts in the five-inning first game, Fletcher smacked two home runs and drove in nine runs in the second game.

On the day, the senior had six hits and 10 RBI as the Lancers improved to 15-6.

“Leslie has been consistent all season long,” St. Joseph coach Ellen Santarelli said. “She keeps the momentum of the team flowing.”

Kendall Bonnin allowed only three hits in seven innings in the second game with one walk and four strikeouts. She also had three hits on the day.

Bonnin (double), Kailee Cable (double, triple) and Sarah Kappeler (triple) also had extra-base hits.

“Kailee did a nice job behind the plate today, throwing out 3-of-4 that tried to steal,” Santarelli said.
