St. Joseph tennis claims another crown
Two tournaments, two titles for the St. Joseph girls tennis team.
The Lancers recorded three victories in convincing fashion en route to winning the championship in the Spartan Team Invitational Saturday at Greendale Martin Luther.
“St. Joseph played awesome in all three rounds against some tough competition,” St. Joseph coach Gail Bedore said. “We came to play team tennis and came home with that first-place medal to prove how strong the depth we do have as a team for the 2009 season.”
Ranked No. 9 in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel area poll, the Lancers defeated Racine Horlick (5-2), Union Grove (5-2) and Milwaukee Lutheran (7-0).
St. Joseph went 12-0 in singles matches.
At No. 1, Amanda Dick did not lose a game on the day, winning three matches by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.
“Amanda continues to get stronger and better with each match she plays,” Bedore said.
Gina Matteucci also went 3-0 at No. 2, losing only two games. Claire Skuble went 2-0 at No. 3 and 1-0 at No. 4, while Bridget O’Toole went 2-0 at No. 4 and 1-0 at No. 3. Both only lost seven games on the day. In doubles, Kristine Kalinka and Kelcy Owens went 2-0 at No. 1 and 1-0 at No. 2. Alaina Anderson and Megan Irving went 2-0 at No. 2, but they lost a match at No. 1.
Michelle Pierce and Meghan Schiaffino and Sophie Manley and Marissa Matteucci both won a match at No. 3.
