Horschak: That didn’t last long
This may absolutely mortify family members and friends, but I was a Chicago Cubs fan for 27 minutes on Sunday.
Having grown weary of the recent troubles of the bumbling Milwaukee Brewers, I decided recently that it was time to pledge my undying allegiance to another Major League Baseball team for the final two months of the regular season.
It was a good run backing the Brew Crew filled with great moments (Yount, Molitor, Gantner, Cooper) and not-so-great moments (Stubbs, Clutterbuck, Quevedo, DeJean, Royster).
Alas, it was time to move on.
I was still in decision mode when I glanced at the muted television set in the Kenosha News sports department at 6:13 p.m.
Leading off the top of the ninth inning, Jake Fox smashed a go-ahead home run off Florida Marlins reliever Brendan Donnelly to give the Cubs a 2-1 lead at Land Shark Stadium.
Before the ball even reached the empty seats in left field, I delirously let out a cry of “Fox!”
It was at that moment that I pronounced the Cubs as my new team.
Two nearby witnesses — sports editor David Marran and fellow sports writer Jeremy Reeves — seemed somewhat agitated at my declaration, but I would not be swayed by their non-support.
Maybe I’ll run out and buy a Cubs hat at a local convenience store during my approaching dinner break, I thought.
My to-do list for the following day would include purchasing a Cubs jersey with the name “FOX” on the back, or maybe even “SCHAK.”
It was all coming together.
Needing only three outs for my first official victory as a Cubs fan, I must admit, I was somewhat giddy.
Closer Kevin Gregg induced a infield pop up to the dangerous Hanley Ramirez for the first out.
And, to quote John Winger, “Then depression set in.”
Getting ahead in the count, Florida second baseman Dan Uggla, hammered a 3-1 curveball from Gregg into the bleachers in left for a game-tying homer.
Still reeling from that blast, I received a second punch to the gut almost immediately when centerfielder Cody Ross sent Gregg’s next offering to the same location for an improbable walk-off winner at 6:40 p.m.
Staring with my mouth agape at the celebrating Marlins on the television, a single voice broke the silence.
“You just got a big dose of what it’s like to be a Cubs fan,” Marran cackled.
If that’s the case, count me out.
I can’t stand the heartbreak.
