Tie leaves bad taste for Rangers
The final score read 1-1 Sunday, but for UW-Parkside men’s soccer coach Rick Kilps the game didn’t feel like a tie.
“This tie feels like a loss,” Kilps said after Saint Joseph’s and his Rangers played to a draw at Wood Road Field. “Our guys are extremely disappointed as you would expect them to be.”
The Rangers got a goal from Johnson Thao in the 14th minute. Jon Bebeau and Nikolas Boedts set up Thao in front of the net where he beat goalkeeper Alex Makin.
Parkside, ranked 24th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division-2 poll, held the lead until the 79th minute. The Pumas got the equalizer when Chad Stuecher scored with assists from Torrey Brock and GLVC goal leader Greg Gehring.
The score came off a scramble in front of Ranger keeper Jamie Lieberman.
“Our defense did a nice job of shutting (Gehring) down all afternoon,” said Kilps, whose team is 9-2-2, 5-2-2 in the GLVC and ranked third in the Midwest Region. “It was unfortunate we gave up the goal that we did. It wasn’t a strong goal and we need to eliminate giving up those silly goals.”
Saint Joseph’s, ranked 10th in the region, is 6-4-2 and 3-3-2.
Parkside outshot Saint’s Joseph 19-9, including a 13-6 edge in the second half and through the two overtimes. The Rangers, still unbeaten in eight home matches this season, also held a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
“We created opportunities but didn’t finish,” Kilps said. “We were our own worst enemy.”
Parkside plays at Harris-Stowe in St. Louis in a non-conference match 1 p.m. Wednesday.
