Tremper falls in State tennis
The Tremper boys tennis team was unable to parlay its first victory at State in 13 years to an extended title run on Saturday.
Middleton downed the Trojans 5-2 in the semifinal round of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division-1 State Team Tournament Saturday morning at the University of Wisconsin’s Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
With the loss, Tremper finished the season at 9-5. Sixth-ranked Middleton finished as the State runner-up, losing to top-ranked Marquette, 6-1, in Saturday afternoon’s title tilt.
The Trojans, ranked honorable mention in Division-1 in the latest Wisconsin Tennis Coaches Association poll, got come-from-behind victories at Nos. 1 and 2 singles. After losing the first set, junior David Carswell (27-7) defeated Robby Kutchin, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Jake Humphreys also dropped the first set before beating Ryan Thomsen, 2-6, 6-0, 6-2.
The No. 1 doubles team of Tomas Goldsmith and Connor Hildebrandt (24-4) suffered the exact opposite fate. After the Trojans’ duo won the first set the Cardinals’ Alex Strunce and and Ian Markson rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory.
The No. 2 doubles team of sophomore Adam Gagliardi and junior Jake Riley, who recorded the key swing match victory in Friday’s 4-3 victory over De Pere, fell to Sam Naden and Charlie Opitz in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5.
Middleton got relatively easy victories at Nos. 3 and 4 singles. Joe Shmigelsky defeated Tremper’s William Horn, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 and Adam Desouky downed Andrew Fields, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4.
The Cardinals’ No. 3 doubles team of Alex Horner and Michael Owem beat Tremper’s Zach Cooper and Jake Larsen, 6-3, 6-0 to round out the scoring.
