Tremper opens with a 16-0 bang
If the state-ranked Tremper soccer team hoped to make a statement in its postseason opener, consider it mission accomplished.
The Trojans, ranked sixth in Division-1 in the latest Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association poll, recorded one of the most lopsided victories in county history in blasting Janesville Parker, 16-0, in a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association regional semifinal Tuesday at Ameche Field.
Tremper (19-1-3) scored three goals in the first four minutes, built a 9-0 lead at halftime and outshot the Vikings, 43-0. Janesville Parker finished winless in 21 matches this season.
“Being playoff time, we needed to get our starters some playing time and have them play with a purpose,” Tremper coach Chris Tindall said. “We never try to rub anyone’s nose in it, but we had to do what was best for us. Our kids, to their credit, played intelligently and let the ball work for us.”
Henrik Egly recorded a hat trick, while Nathan Oster, Matt Vecchitto, Dom Pisciotti and Jesus Oseguera each had two goals. Also scoring for the Trojans were Adam Janic, Gabe Puterbaugh, Jake Humphreys, Alex Ridolfi and Matt Steinmetz.
Janic scored just two minutes into the match, while Egly and Oster also found the back of the net in giving the Trojans a 3-0 lead at the four-minute mark.
“The thing we preach is when you have an opportunity in front of the goal, you have to make the most of it,” Tindall said. “We were able to do that early and often.”
As expected, Tremper played without star David Caban. The junior forward will miss the postseason due to a commitment for the U-18 Men’s National Team.
The Trojans host Southeast Conference foe Racine Park in a regional final 7 p.m. Thursday at Ameche Field. Tremper shut out the Panthers 4-0 last week.
