Tremper runs past Shoreland
The Tremper boys soccer team sure has its way of making impressions.
Jesus Oseguera scored just 23 seconds into the match as the Trojans blasted host Shoreland Lutheran, 7-2, in a non-conference match between two state-ranked county teams Thursday in Somers.
Tremper (11-1-2) is ranked eighth in Division-1 in the latest Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association poll, while Shoreland (9-3-2) is ranked second in Division-3.
Shoreland coach Dan Hahm had nothing but praise for the Trojans.
“This is not only one of the best teams we’ve ever played, ever, but one of the best teams I’ve ever seen,” Shoreland coach Dan Hahm said. “For the first 10 minutes, we were sitting on our heels in awe of their play.”
Tremper’s quick goal was even more impressive considering Shoreland was awarded the kickoff. In just 23 seconds, Tremper won the ball and put it in the back of the net. Oseguera’s goal was assisted by Matt Vecchitto.
“We played a ball down the right flank and Jesus just touched it home,” Tremper coach Chris Tindall said. “It was a great way to start the game.”
The Trojans struck again in the 11th minute on a goal from Nathan Oster assisted by Connor Hildebrandt and built a 3-0 lead in the 37th minute when Vecchitto scored on an assist from Oseguera.
Tremper took a 4-0 lead in the 53rd minute when Oster found the back of the net once again on an assist from Vecchitto.
“(Vecchitto) had a nice matchup on the flank,” Tindall said. “His speed was tough to deal with.”
Shoreland’s Trent Schwartz scored in the 62nd minute on an assist from Ryan Kurth before the Trojans answered with two goals in a three-minute span. David Caban scored unassisted in the 67th minute and Henrik Egly scored on Vecchitto’s third assist of the game. Dom Pisciotti closed out the scoring for Tremper in the 70th minute on an assist from Egly.
Shoreland’s Mike Roekle added a last-second goal in the 80th minute on an assist from Schwartz.
“This was one of those games that really put a microscope on what we have to shore up as we move along,” Hahm said. “That’s what I wanted out of this game.”
Tremper outshot Shoreland, 24-6.
Both teams have St. Joseph on deck. Tremper hosts the Lancers 6:30 p.m. Saturday in a non-conference match at Ameche, while Shoreland takes on St. Joseph 4:30 p.m. Monday in a Midwest Classic Conference match at Anderson.
Falcons top Waterford
Sean O’Neill scored two goals as Central edged host Waterford, 3-2, in a Southern Lakes Conference match.
O’Neill, a junior forward, tied the game 1-1 in the 14th minute on a goal assisted by freshman Max Byers and scored the game-winner to break a 2-2 deadlock in the 56th minute on an assist from Peter Andersen.
The Falcons, who improved to 1-4-2 in the SLC (3-8-2 overall), scored their other goal on a penalty kick from Andersen after O’Neill was taken down in the box.
“Sean had a hand in all the goals,” Central coach Jeremy Williams said. “He played out of his head. (Waterford) tried to do all it could and he was still getting shots off. He just did a fantastic job.”
Central led 2-1 at halftime.
Williams also credited the play of defender Ryan Brick, goalkeeper Matt LaMeer and Byers.
The Falcons compete in the Christian Life Tournament 10 a.m. Saturday.
Lancers outplayed
St. Joseph surrendered goals in the 11th and 36th minutes in a 2-0 loss at University School.
The Lancers fell to 2-2-1 in the Midwest Classic Conference and 5-8-1 overall.
“They outplayed us in every aspect,” St. Joseph coach Peter Iliev said.
The Wildcats, who scored their first goal off a direct kick, received honorable mention in Division-3 in the latest WSCA state poll.
St. Joseph next plays state-ranked Tremper in a non-conference match 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Ameche Field.
“That will be a big challenge for us,” Iliev said.
Bank’s goal not enough
Coming off a tie against Central, Wilmot couldn’t break through in a 4-1 Southern Lakes Conference loss at Union Grove.
Jordan Bank scored the lone goal in the second half for the Panthers (0-7-1 SLC).
Wilmot plays in the Falcoln Tournament on Saturday at Christian Life.
