Tremper takes the SEC tennis title
The Tremper girls tennis team proved it is truly the class of the Southeast Conference.
Just one week after finishing undefeated in SEC dual meets, the Trojans won four of seven flights and finished second in the other three to claim the SEC Tournament championship Saturday at Bradford and Tremper.
Tremper finished first with 35 points, while defending SEC champion Bradford placed second with 24.75. Franklin was third with 16, followed by Muskego (14.5), Oak Creek (10.5), Racine Horlick (10.5), Racine Case (5.25) and Racine Park (.75).
“I’m just happy for the girls,” Tremper co-coach Tom Pacetti said. “They really worked hard and put in the time and the effort to get themselves better. It was a nice victory for them. We’re playing some of our best tennis right now and it’s good to see.”
The Trojans swept all three doubles flights and pulled off a victory at No. 3 singles. Tremper’s Jenna Humphreys and Brianna Riley claimed the No. 1 doubles crown, Sonja Johnson and Kari Kirkegaard won at No. 2 doubles and Hollie White and Mara Bertog secured the No. 3 doubles title.
The Trojans needed a productive day from their doubles teams to hold off crosstown rival Bradford.
“We had to work for it,” Pacetti said. “It wasn’t easy by any means. Our No. 2 and No. 3 doubles played really well and I started feeling a lot better once they got rolling. We started racking up some points once we got some matches under our belt.”
Tremper’s Rachel Shapiro didn’t drop a set in three matches in cruising to the No. 3 singles championship. Shapiro defeated Bradford’s Kim Jozefiak, 6-2, 6-3 in the final.
The Red Devils claimed three singles titles. Karyn Guttormsen defeated Tremper’s Megan Humphreys, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, Trina Capelli knocked off Trojan Garette Gessert, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Megha Shah beat Tremper’s Julia Broesch, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
Megan Humphreys challenged Guttormsen once again in putting up a valiant effort against one of the state’s elite players. The freshman nearly took a set from Guttormsen in the final SEC dual as well.
“Karyn is a great player and Megan played her tough,” Pacetti said. “Megan is very consistent and works points pretty well, while Karyn is a hard hitter that likes to finish points quickly. Megan is just a freshman and not a lot of people know about her, but she’s already one of the better players we’ve ever had at Tremper.”
