Tremper’s interim job goes to Savaglio
Dr. Al Savaglio has been named as the interim boys basketball coach at Tremper for the 2009-10 season, Kenosha Unified Coordinator of Athletics Scott Lindgren announced on Tuesday.
Savaglio, a 1979 Tremper graduate, replaces John Wilhelmson, who resigned last week.
In 11 seasons, Wilhelmson compiled a record of 166-89 (.651).
His teams advanced to the WIAA Division-1 sectional nine times, including eight in a row from 1999 to 2006.
“I’m excited at the opportunity to be the interim coach and want to continue the success that Coach Wilhelmson and previous Tremper coaches have attained in building a winning basketball tradition,” Savaglio said in a statement released by the school.
Although he does not have prior high school coaching experience, Savaglio has a coaching background. He coached the Kenosha Small Fry program for two years and guided the Kenosha Spirit program from 2002 to 2008.
Savaglio inherits a Tremper team that finished 10-6 in the Southeast Conference and 15-8 overall last season.
The new Tremper coach will get the opportunity to coach his son, Sam, who will be entering his senior season. Sam Savaglio and senior Ruben Williams are expected to form one of the top backcourts in the area this season.
