Trojans advance in State tennis
Tremper won two of its three matches in the opening round of the WIAA Division-1 Individual State Tournament on Thursday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
The Trojans split their two singles matches.
Appearing in his third State Tournament, junior David Carswell defeated Hartford senior Ben Purman, 6-3, 6-3. Purman (19-6) was seeded among the top 16 players.

Carswell (24-6) will play Marshfield senior John Coleman (15-8) in the second round 10 a.m. today.
Jake Humphreys was not as fortunate.
The Tremper freshman lost in straight sets to undefeated Brookfield Central senior Ryan Denu, 6-2, 6-4. It was only the third loss in 30 matches this season for Humphreys. Denu improved to 28-0.
Tremper’s top doubles team of Tomas Goldsmith and Connor Hildebrandt had little trouble putting away Appleton North seniors Tyke Pierce and Mike Smongeski, 6-1, 6-1.
Goldsmith and Hildebrandt (23-2) will face Monona Grove’s Korbinian Enzinger and Aaron Kondrasuk (9-1) in the second round 11:30 a.m. today. Enzinger and Kondrasuk are seeded among the top 16 doubles teams.
In another doubles match on Thursday, Brookfield East seniors Nick Engstrand and Brad Lojewski knocked off Bradford’s Anthony Greco and Ron Palmen, 6-3, 6-3. Greco and Palmen ended their season with a 7-5 record.
Division-2
St. Joseph’s Ryan Aschenbrener and Harry Feuerbach had a successful State debut in the Division-2 tourney.
After a shaky start, the Lancer duo took care of Edgerton seniors Ben Fuder and Chad Prater, 7-6 (2), 6-1.
“They were a little nervous in the first set, but they obviously worked it out in the second set,” St. Joseph coach Stu Short said. “The second set they turned it on and played like they’ve played all year.”
Aschenbrener and Feuerbach (5-3) will get a rematch with Racine Prairie’s Matt Joost and Paolo Pahm (23-5) in the second round 1 p.m. today. Joost and Pahm, who are seeded among the top eight teams, won a sectional matchup, 6-1, 6-4.
“We are going to see a little revenge there, hopefully,” Short said. “Our guys will be fresh compared to at sectionals where it was our third match of the day. Hopefully we’ll give them a better match this time.”
