MILWAUKEE — The Tremper boys soccer team has suffered its share of heartbreaking losses against Muskego, but this one was clearly in a class of its own.

The Trojans (22-2-3) had one of their finest seasons in school history abruptly halted in falling to rival Muskego 1-0 in a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division-1 State Tournament quarterfinal match Thursday at rain-soaked Uihlein Soccer Park.

Muskego’s Zak DeGrave scored off a restart on an assist from Riley Weiner at 68 minutes, 22 seconds for the game’s lone goal. DeGrave took a long, crossing free kick out of the air and volleyed it into the back of the net.

The goal came less than nine minutes after Tremper couldn’t capitalize on a penalty kick in clearly the pivotal point of the match.

After Tremper’s Dominic Pisciotti was fouled in the box, Trojan sharp-shooter Henrik Egly was denied the penalty shot on a sliding, kick-save from Muskego goalkeeper Randon Roesch in the 60th minute. The shot deflected off Roesch and then ricocheted off the post, preventing the Trojans from scoring their first State goal in 25 years.

Tremper, ranked sixth in Division-1 in the Wisconsin Coaches Association State poll, suffered both of its losses this season against the third-ranked Warriors (25-1-1).

“It’s the worst team to ever lose to,” Egly said. “They took away our title in the Southeast Conference and now they’ve ended our State run.”

In a game played through a steady rain and strong wind, Egly said he mishit the penalty kick on the wet grass. The junior midfielder sent the ball right-footed into the lower right corner. It was Egly’s first missed penalty kick in four attempts this season.

“I tried to go to the same spot I usually go,” Egly said. “I slipped right when I was kicking it. I thought I’d be able to put it in.”

After the missed opportunity, Tremper coach Chris Tindall tried desperately to keep his team’s confidence level high. However, Muskego clearly grabbed the momentum and capitalized when Tremper defender Connor Hildebrandt was whistled for a foul near the far sideline. Weiner then sent a dangerous free kick into the box, giving Muskego all it needed to put away the Trojans once again.

“We’re getting used to that with Muskego, unfortunately,” Tindall said. “As a coach, you wish there was something you could tell them to make them feel better at this point. I’m not smart enough to figure out what that is. We battled and gave them everything we had.”

As expected, the Trojans played without their top two offensive players. Senior Jesus Oseguera sat out the game after receiving a red card in Saturday’s sectional final, while junior David Caban was ineligible because of a previous commitment on the U-18 Men’s National Team.

“It makes you wonder, what if we had (Oseguera and Caban),” Egly said. “You wonder what if I didn’t miss the (penalty kick). We did the best we could.”

Muskego advanced to the semifinal and will face Arrowhead 7 p.m. tonight. DePere (18-9) plays Madison Memorial (16-2-4) in the other semifinal at 5 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Warriors (25-1-1) outshot Tremper, 10-5.
