Twins pull off a stunning upset
The Kenosha Twins eliminated the Kenosha Post 21 Merchants from the American Legion Class AAA Region 7 Tournament Thursday night at Simmons Field.
In an elimination game against the state’s second-ranked team, the sub-.500 Twins scored an 8-4 victory.
Alex Newberry pitched a complete game with four walks and one strikeout for the Twins (10-11).
The Merchants finished the season 33-9.
“It was really a good game, a lot of fun,” Twins manager Mike Tennyson said. “Newberry was outstanding. We played error-free defense and had a number of big hits. All of that has to happen to beat a good team like the Merchants.”
After retiring the first eight batters, Newberry (3-3) gave up a two-out double to Dom Tirabassi in the bottom of the third inning. Tirabassi scored on a hit by Brendan Schulz to give the Merchants a 1-0 lead.
The Twins then took the lead in the fifth with doubles by Tyler Panasewicz, Nick Paura and Ryan Neu.
The game continued to go back and forth as the Merchants scored twice to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Ricky Steinke drove in Jon Atkins with a hit and Shawn Miller scored when Joel Bergman drew a walk with the bases loaded.
The Twins wasted no time coming back, however, plating a run in the top of the seventh when Paura tripled in Eric Corrao with the tying run.
The Twins broke the game open by scoring five times in the top of the eighth.
After Ryan Neu led off with a double, Eric Carter drove in pinch-runner Ricky Betori with the go-ahead run and chased starter Dustin Proud from the game.
Drew Tennyson then greeted reliever Brandon Dahl with a base hit, followed by an RBI single by Alex Pencak. After Dahl hit Panasewicz to load the bases, Eric Corrao cleared them with a three-run double to complete the scoring.
“Eric has come up with some big hits this summer,” Mike Tennyson said, “but none bigger than that double.”
Redlegs to play FranklinThe Genoa City Post 183 Redlegs will play Franklin Post 192 in a winner’s bracket game 5 p.m. today at Simmons Field.

Genoa City pulled out a 9-8 victory in 10 innings against the Kenosha Post 21 Merchants, while Franklin scored a wild 19-18 victory over Burlington Post 79 at Beaumont Field.
After surrendering three runs in the top of the 10th inning, the Redlegs rallied for four runs in the bottom of the frame.
Laramie Wieseman had a game-tying three-run triple and Danny Wester followed with a game-winning single.
