After losing the first game, 8-5, the UW-Parkside softball team blanked Saint Xavier (Ill.), 7-0, to salvage a non-conference doubleheader split Monday at the Case Complex in Somers.
Carly Dundee (10-13) needed only 78 pitches to hurl a complete-game, four-hitter with no walks and two strikeouts in the Rangers’ win, which gave her double-digit victories for the first time in her college career.
Dundee allowed only one runner past second base. The senior from Homer Glen, Ill., also helped her own cause at the plate by going 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and one run scored.
Leadoff hitter Jessica Shields went 3-for-3 with a walk, two stolen bases (giving her a team-high 19) and two runs.
Racine Horlick graduate Cassie Walek hit two doubles, scored once, walked and drove in two runs.
Freshman Emilee Nelson, a Tremper graduate, capped the scoring with a pinch-hit, two-run home run — her first college round-tripper — to left field in the fifth.
In the opener, the Rangers (15-25) couldn’t hold early 1-0 and 2-1 leads and stranded 13 baserunners.
Saint Xavier (17-20) scored four runs in the top of the seventh to go ahead 8-3. Morgan Sikon hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the bottom of the inning, and the Rangers later brought the tying run to the plate but they couldn’t get any closer.
Parkside’s Jessica Crull cracked a solo homer in the fifth to trim the deficit to 4-3.
UWP lost despite outhitting Saint Xavier 13-11. Other offensive leaders for the Rangers included Shields (2-for-5), Kellie Fenza (3-for-4, double, run, RBI) and Madison Manders (2-for-4, double).
Allison Hausl (4-9) took the loss after giving up 10 hits and eight earned runs in 6
innings with four walks and one strikeout.
Parkside will return to action Saturday afternoon with a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader against Rockhurst in Kansas City, Mo.
