UWP women drop fifth in a row

Rangers remain winless in the GLVCwith an 18-point setback at Maryville

The UW-Parkside women’s basketball team extended one of its longest losing streaks in eight seasons by falling to Maryville, 78-60, in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game Saturday in St. Louis.

The Rangers (4-8) dropped to 0-4 in the GLVC with their fifth straight defeat. Parkside hasn’t lost five in a row since dropping six straight during the 2005-06 season.

Cold shooting

After shooting a chilly 21 percent (5-of-24) from the field in the first half, Parkside trailed 38-19 at halftime and was down by as many as 26 points in the second half. The Rangers shot 32 percent (16-of-50) and committed 20 turnovers.

Maryville (9-5, 2-2) shot 47 percent (28-of-60) behind a game-high 23 points from Rita Flynn.

Parkside had four players score in double figures. Gaby Bronson had 15 points and four assists, while Tara Knapstein finished with 14 points and four rebounds. Maddie Johnston and Danielle Slivka each scored 10.

Homecoming

It was the first time Parkside first-year head coach Jacob Yorg faced his former team. Yorg served as the Saints’ associate head coach from 2008-2013.

Parkside plays at Illinois-Springfield in a GLVC game 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
