The Kenosha Unified hockey team allowed a short-handed goal just 10 seconds into the third period in falling to Waunakee, 3-2, in a non-conference game Thursday at the Kenosha Ice Arena.

With the score knotted 2-2, the Thunder (2-3) began the third period on the power play and lost the opening face-off at center ice. Waunakee pushed the puck through the defense and quickly beat Thunder goaltender Nick Hollendonner for the deciding goal.

“You need to play all three periods,” Thunder coach Steve Carlson said. “We only played a period and a half. We should’ve beat this team but we didn’t come out to play.”

Unified, which couldn’t convert on numerous power-play opportunities, trailed 1-0 after the first period and fell behind 2-0 in the second period. The Thunder scored a pair of second-period goals as Cody Krol cut the deficit to 2-1 and Sam Spair tied the game.

The Thunder, however, couldn’t capitalize in the third period.

“Overall, we’re not playing well,” Carlson said. “We go in spurts and then we don’t play well. We’re very inconsistent. We’re not prepared. Fundamentally, we’re making the wrong decisions on the ice.”

Unified plays at Oconomowoc 5 p.m. Saturday in a Classic 8 Conference game.
