Westside heading to State
The 4.0 Senior Women’s Westside tennis team will play in the State Senior Championships beginning Friday at the University of Wisconsin Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
The team will take a 9-2 team record and 26-7 match record into the tournament, which runs through Sunday.
Team members are Betsy Anderson, Julee Scherrer, Claire Calligure, Suzie Schmidt, Rose Dolatowski, Chris Smiley, Sherry Dussault, Leilane Sta Romana, Deb Heller, Deb Veenstra, Ruth Kent and Peggy Ventura.
The team claimed the USTA Greater Milwaukee division title by defeating Lake Country 2-1 in the league playoffs at Heyer Park/Highlander Elite in Waukesha.
Winners for Westside were Sta Romana and Chris Smiley and Kent and Heller.
East Side BadgersThe East Side Badger Junior team 14-and-under team recently took third at the USTA Midwest Championships in Indianapolis.
East Side advanced to the semifinal round before bowing to Charleston, W. Va., on a tiebreaker.
Badger winners were Taylor Bolyard and Alaina Anderson and Megan Irving and Taylor Bolyard and Patrick Georno in doubles.
East Side then defeated West Bloomfield, Mich., in the third-place match.
Winning for the Badgers were Pete McKeon and Nate McKeon, Anderson and Irving and Georno and Anderson in doubles and Georno in singles.
Georno and Anderson won their first set in a tiebreaker and then won the second set easily to clinch third place.
