When it comes to perfection, Bradford has company
The Bradford football team certainly is in perfect company when it comes to the Wisconsin Interscholastic playoffs.
The Red Devils were one of 21 teams who kept their record perfect in Tuesday’s first round of the 7-level, 224-team playoff field.
Bradford’s Division-1 field has a tournament-high six undefeated teams in its bracket. In addition to Bradford, Appleton North, Stevens Point, Homestead, Waukesha West and Milwaukee Marquette are all 10-0.
Ticket talk
Tickets for Saturday’s 1 p.m. game between Bradford and Tremper will be sold at Ameche Field beginning at 10:45 a.m. Saturday.
Tickets are available for purchase over the Internet at http://tremper.safesportzone.com.
Tickets are $4 for adults and students and $1 for children 6-and-under. Tickets for children are available at the gate only.
Bradford fans are asked to park in the Anderson pool lot and the Vernon Elementary School lot and enter the east gate. Tremper fans are asked to park in the Ameche Field lot, which can be accessed via 87th Place.
No passes will be accepted. The gates open at noon.
A big win
Bradford posted the second biggest margin of victory in the first round of the playoffs.
The Red Devils’ 58-0 swamping of Milwaukee Bay View was second only to Sun Prairie’s 59-0 win over Milwaukee Vincent in Division-1.
Bradford’s school playoff record 58 points were the fifth-highest output of the first round. Only Pulaski (62), Algoma (61) Waterford (60) and Sun Prairie (59) surpassed Bradford’s opening round output.
Conference call
Bradford and Tremper’s Southeast Conference went 4-1 in the first round. Oak Creek and Franklin (Division-2) joined the Kenosha schools in the win column while Racine Park suffered the SEC’s lone first-round loss with a 49-17 setback to Marquette. ... St. Joseph’s and Shoreland’s Midwest Classic South Conference was also 3-1 with Burlington Catholic Central (Division-7), Racine Lutheran (Division-6) and Greendale Martin Luther (Division-5) winning but St. Joseph (Division-5 losing). … Central and Wilmot’s Southern Lakes Conference went 3-for-3 in the first round with Lake Geneva Badger, Waterford and Union Grove advancing.
We meet again
Four of the eight Division-1 second round games are rematches, including the Bradford-Tremper clash.
Also meeting for the second time are Appleton North and Oshkosh North (Appleton North won 28-20 Sept. 11); Waukesha West and Arrowhead (Waukesha West won 12-6 Sept. 18); and Middleton and Verona (Middleton won 26-0 Sept. 11).
Bradford defeated Tremper 35-6 on Oct. 21 in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Brew city bummer
Tremper and Bradford did their part in making it an absolutely miserable first round for Milwaukee’s public schools.
Bradford’s dominance of Bay View and Tremper’s 14-8 win over Riverside were part of an 0-7 opening round for Milwaukee City Conference representatives.
The most surprising outcome may have come in Division-2, where unseeded South Milwaukee toppled No. 1 seed Milwaukee Bradley Tech 28-21.
The Milwaukee public schools were outscored 318-41.
Looking ahead
Should traditional power Marquette handle Oak Creek at 4 p.m. Saturday, the Milwaukee-based private school will be in line to play a Kenosha school in Kenosha for the first time in more than 13 years.
The Bradford-Tremper winner gets the Oak Creek-Marquette survivor Nov. 6 or 7.
The Hilltoppers haven’t played a Kenosha school in Kenosha since defeating St. Joseph 36-0 at Anderson Field on Sept. 21, 1996.
It was Marquette’s 27th consecutive victory over St. Joseph in the last meeting between the longtime Metro Conference members.
