Wilmot, Central meet again
Don’t expect a slugfest when the Wilmot softball team hosts Central in a WIAA Division-1 regional final 4:30 p.m. today.
The second-seeded Panthers (18-2) and seventh-seeded Falcons (15-6) split their first two meetings this season with pitching and defense taking center stage.
On April 7, the Southern Lakes Conference champion Panthers doubled up the Falcons, 4-2, as freshmen Kristen Wood and Kelsey Saucerman starred in their varsity debuts.
Wood pitched a seven-hit complete game with four walks and 12 strikeouts. She also went 2-for-4 with an RBI double. Saucerman went 3-for-4 and drove in Wilmot’s first two runs.
On May 5, Central handed Wilmot one of its two losses and avenged the earlier defeat with a 1-0 victory in eight innings.
UW-Green Bay recruit Jess Hrncar led off the top of the eighth inning with a solo homer for the game’s only run. Heather Pohlman pitched a six-hit shutout with one walk and six strikeouts. In her seven-hit complete game, Wood walked one and struck out 14.
In another Division-1 regional final at 4:30 p.m. today, top-ranked and top-seeded Bradford (20-1) hosts ninth-seeded Janesville Craig (14-9).
“We’re going to go for it,” Craig coach Dan Bayreuther told the Janesville Gazette. “We have nothing to lose. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”
Craig advanced with a 7-5 victory over Tremper in the regional semifinal on Tuesday.
The Central-Wilmot winner and Bradford-Craig winner will advance to next week’s sectional along with the Beloit-Milton winner and the Badger-Verona winner.
The sectional is Thursday, June 4 at Verona.
Division-3
With St. Joseph unable to play for the second day in a row because of wet weather, the Division-3 bracket underwent some changes.
The second-seeded Lancers (15-6) will host third-seeded Greendale Martin Luther (10-10) in a regional semifinal 5:30 p.m. today at Little League Park (No. 1).
St. Joseph, which lost to the Spartans 8-7 on May 15, is eager to hit the diamond.
“We could’ve played (Tuesday),” St. Joseph coach Ellen Santarelli said. “We just needed a little work on those diamonds. That’s the frustrating part, but what are you going to do?”
Today’s winner will play fifth-seeded Christian Life (14-7) in the regional final 4 p.m. Friday at Carthage College. The regional final was originally scheduled for today.
The Eagles blanked top-seeded Shoreland Lutheran in a regional semifinal on Tuesday, 4-0.
