Dr. Steven and Elaine Azuma of Kenosha celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a family trip to Oregon in July.
Steve and the former Elaine Baer met in 1963 at Monmouth College, Monmouth, Ill., where he served as the student preceptor for a group of incoming freshman, which included Elaine. The couple was married in her home church, South Webster Presbyterian Church, in Webster Groves, Mo., on Sept. 21, 1968. Elaine said they “continue to cultivate a living legacy from our wedding. Our wedding ivy plant, once a sprig of ivy nestled in my wedding bouquet, has been rooted, potted, watered, fertilized, pruned and replanted through cuttings over the years.”
Steve retired as an obstetrician-gynecologist at OB-GYN Associates of Kenosha in 2006. Elaine served as a part-time reference librarian at the Kenosha Public Library from 1996 until her retirement in 2012. The members of First Presbyterian Church have been Kenosha residents since 1977. The couple enjoys swimming at the Y, bicycling, reading and attending Kenosha’s cultural events. They also enjoy traveling, especially to visit their four daughters: Dr. Elise (Darren) Opel, Sheboygan; Dr. Lynn (Dr. Brian Hall) Azuma, Georgetown, Texas; Andrea (Jim Radford) Azuma, Sierra Madre, Calif.; and Beth (Gregory Moy) Azuma-Moy, Seattle; and 10 grandchildren.
When asked what they would tell others is the key to a successful and lasting relationship they responded, “Ground your relationship in faith and mutual respect. Grow strong bonds of family and friends. Enjoy and be thankful for the many blessings of life.”
