JD and Kathy Garoutte of Kenosha marked their 50th wedding anniversary with a celebration on Sept. 22 at Meadowbrook Country Club, Racine.
JD Garoutte of Dallas, Texas, met Kathy Trotta of Kenosha at the Enlisted Men’s Club at Great Lakes Naval Base in North Chicago, Ill., in 1968. They were married on Sept. 20, 1969, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Kenosha.
In the Navy, JD completed Naval Hospital Corps School at Great Lakes Naval Station. He left the Navy after two tours in Vietnam, graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and earned a master’s degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
JD worked for several firms and was the first economic developer for Kenosha County. In 2011 he retired from Peer Bearing Company, Waukegan, Ill.
Kathy worked as a registered nurse at Kenosha Hospital and Medical Center for 43 years, retiring in 2015. A St. Joseph High School graduate, she completed nursing education at St. Therese School of Nursing, Waukegan, and earned a master’s degree from College of St. Francis, Joliet, Ill.
The couple are lifelong members of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. They have two children: Jeniffer (Robert) Dzbinski and Brian (Beth) Garoutte, all of Kenosha. They have five grandchildren.
They said the keys to their successful relationship are “to have faith in God, love, patience and a deep understanding of each other’s needs, especially in difficult times. In other words, you have to know when to hold them and know when to fold them.”
