A luncheon with family and friends at Casa Capri was held in April in honor of Jim and Jane (Elyea) Smith’s golden wedding anniversary. The couple met on a blind date arranged by a friend and were married at Salem United Methodist Church, where they are still members, on April 20, 1968.

Jim was the owner of Smith Electric until 2004 and then worked in the maintenance department at Salem Grade School before retiring on Feb. 1 of this year. Jane is the secretary at Salem United Methodist Church. They are also members of the Burlington Area Car Club.

The Smiths have three children: Jennifer Egeland, Union Grove; Julie (Travis) Burdin, Burlington; and Jeanette (Jeff) Heyer, Round Lake Beach, Ill.; and three grandchildren.

They attribute the success of their marriage to good communication, respect for each other and being best friends.
