If you come across an accident scene, there are certain things you can do to assist victims and other things that may be counterproductive, say experts.
The following pointers have been shared by Katie Johnson, trauma coordinator and emergency department educator for Aurora Medical Center, Kenosha.
n Keep people in the car if possible.
n When EMS gets on scene, provide as much information about the situation as possible.
n Don’t put unclean materials on wounds.
n Don’t put yourself in danger while helping.
n Don’t do things you don’t know.
n Don’t remove a person from the car unless they move on their own; wait until EMS gets there.
n If a person can get out but seems in shock, make sure they are conscious before helping them out of the car.
