New resale shop opens in Kenosha

A resale shop specializing in clothes and items for growing families is now open in Kenosha.

Once Upon a Child opened Thursday at 4623 75th St., Unit 1.

It is part of a national recycling retail chain that specializes in merchandise for infants to preteens. The store buys and sells quality, gently used children’s apparel, shoes, books, baby equipment, furniture and more.

Unlike a typical consignment store, Once Upon A Child does not require appointments and pays on the spot for items it purchases from consumers.

In addition, Once Upon A Child ensures that all products purchased and sold meet mandatory and voluntary safety standards.

A number of grand opening events are planned through the weekend:

Today is Santa and the Grinch Day. Santa will be available 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 to 5 p.m. The Grinch and Cindy Lou Hoo will be at the store all day. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Sunday is Superheroes and Princesses. Kids can have their photos taken with a superhero or princess. Hours are noon to 5 p.m.

Each day also features drawings, raffles and $10 gift cards given away to the first 20 people in line.

The local owners of Once Upon A Child are Maloree and Steven McNabb of Kenosha. Recently married with hope for children in the near future, they realized that planning for a child can be very costly. They decided that this store was the perfect solution for local families that felt exactly the same way.

“Kenosha is home to a vibrant and family-oriented community,” Maloree said. “Kenosha is a highly-populated community of growing children and parents are seeking a local affordable solution to keep up with the outgrown clothes, toys and other needs. By purchasing merchandise directly from consumers, we’re able to offer them lower prices and a great opportunity to receive cash on the spot for items they may have otherwise simply given away.”

For questions on the buying process or store hours, the new Once Upon A Child can be reached at 262-764-0094 or

With more than 325 franchised stores in the United States and Canada, Once Upon A Child is franchised by Winmark Corp., which also franchises Play It Again Sports, Plato’s Closet, Style Encore and Music Go Round.

Based in Minneapolis, Winmark specializes in leasing and developing franchises for retail stores that buy, sell and trade new and used merchandise.
