Shop Small: Kenosha Merchants gear up for Small Business Saturday

DKI Executive Director Alexandria Robinson addressed the crowd Wednesday to expand on the organization and the efforts that it has undertaken with community support.

Shop small is the message that merchants want customers to embrace as they set about their holiday shopping this week.

Small Business Saturday, which takes place the Saturday after Thanksgiving, is focused on getting shoppers away from big-box and chain stores and into downtowns and mom-and-pop operations.

The Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. reports that 90 percent of the businesses in downtown districts are locally owned and that 14 percent of total retail sales and 27 percent of restaurant sales are generated in Main Street and downtown business districts.

Some local merchants say Small Business Saturday is a day for people who like to avoid the crowds, resist going online and discover specialty, locally made and one-of-a-kind items.

Downtown Kenosha Inc. has been designated a neighborhood sponsor for the “#shopsmall movement,” said DKI Executive Director Alexandria Binanti Robinson.

“Downtown Kenosha traditionally does a social media promotion of engaging activities and promotions happening downtown,” she said.

She said businesses signing up for the promotion will receive complimentary #shopsmall event kits that will include canvas bags, signs, balloons and other items to promote the day.

Additionally, Downtown Kenosha hosts a social media contest for shoppers. To participate, shoppers should snap a photo of their purchases, include the tag #shopsmalldowntownktown and post them to DKI’s Facebook, Twitter or instagram pages. Doing so automatically enters the shopper for a drawing for a gift card to one of the downtown businesses.

To see a list of participating businesses, go to the DKI Facebook event page for the unveiling, on Wednesday.
