A Fort Atkinson man was arrested and taken to the Kenosha County Jail on Saturday for stealing 2,000 feet of copper wire from Menard’s, 7330 74th Place
According to the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department, the 49-year-old pulled out of the store with two spools of wire, valued at $2,040, hidden under a blanket in the back of his minivan. Deputies recognized the vehicle from a traffic stop on Friday resulting in multiple traffic citations.
As deputies followed, the van pulled into a cemetery in the 15200 block of Highway 50.
The driver told deputies he picked up the wire from his mother’s shed in Fort Atkinson. He had a receipt for $1.94 from Menard’s at 7:28 a.m. Saturday.
Store security said video shows the man taking the merchandise. When an employee checked his vehicle and asked about the blanket, the man said there was nothing underneath it and told the employee, “You have to check. You never know if I’m stealing something.”
The man was arrested for theft and cited for driving with a revoked license, no insurance and using an unauthorized vehicle registration.
