A Racine Police officer was shot and killed Monday night while responding to a report of a robbery.
According to a news release from the Racine Police Department, Officer John Hetland witnessed an armed robbery in progress at Teezers Tavern, 1936 Lathrop Ave., at about 9:40 p.m.
Although off-duty, Hetland tried to stop the robbery but sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
No arrests have been made in the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
The Kenosha County Sheriff's Department has taken the primary lead in the investigation, assisted by the Racine County Sheriff's Department, Wisconsin Crime Lab and Wisconsin State Patrol.
Hetland was a 24-year veteran of the Racine Police Department. He held various positions over the years, including an assignment as a field training officer, as well as a member of the Greater Racine FBI Gang Task Force.
