Kindergartners at Whittier Elementary School haven’t entered the first grade yet, but they have already complete a day of college.

On Monday, University of Wisconsin-Parkside Chancellor Debbie Ford handed out certificates to our Kindergartners for completing a day at college.

According to Whittier instructional coach Becky Clements, the kindergartners took an all-day field trip to Parkside to experience a “Day of College,” touring the campus and doing different activities.

“They spent the day with professors from the university learning about music, science, gym and library,” Clements said. “They worked their way around stations where they got to play different musical instruments, do science experiments, learn and play different sports and gym games, and go to the library and read. The teachers called it the ‘Ultimate Kindergarten Field Trip.’

“This was the first field trip of its kind organized together with the chancellor and the kindergarten teachers. “

On Monday, the student presented Ford with thank-you letters and cards, Clements said.

“The students had so much on the field trip that they couldn’t stop talking about ‘when they go to college,’” she said.

“Many parents who chaperoned the field trip said it was the best field trip they’ve been on and were very impressed with Parkside.”
