Kenosha Community Health Center grand opening set for Monday in Silver Lake

SILVER LAKE — The community is invited to an outdoor barbecue from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday to celebrate the grand opening of the new Kenosha Community Health Center, at 903 S. Second St., in Silver Lake.

The medical, behavioral health and dental satellite office will fill a health care void for the underinsured and uninsured in the rural reaches of Kenosha County, Chief Executive Officer Alan Marshall said.

Service will be provided on a sliding fee scale based on family size and income. Because KCHC is a nonprofit, it can also waive fees depending on need as well.

Sharon Pomaville, executive director of the Sharing Center, helped quantify the need for the center as part of the grant application submitted by KCHC to secure a $1 million Health Infrastructure Program grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to renovate the building.

“I see a lot of people suffering for lack of good, affordable health care,” Pomaville said when the center was announced last December. “There is a disparity between the care low-income (people) receive and the care available to the insured.”

Pomaville said she knows of only two dental offices in Kenosha County that accept Medicaid, for example.

The medical center features a lobby, four medical exam rooms, office space and a lab area on the main floor and a behavioral health room, three dental bays and a sterilization lab on the lower level. The building was once a medical center, but was most recently a veterinarian clinic.

KCHC will lease the building, with an option to purchase. It was one of four health centers in Wisconsin and 290 in 45 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico that were awarded more than $260 million for facility renovation, expansion or construction.

The center will offer:

Chronic disease management.

Immunizations for adults and children.

Preventative care screenings.

Urgent medical care.

Family planning.

Behavioral screenings and interventions.

General and urgent dental care.

KCHC also has three service sites in the city of Kenosha with the goal of making preventive and health management care affordable and accessible.
