11 compete in annual history center chili cook-off

Eleven local restaurants, along with the Kenosha Fire Department, battled for culinary bragging rights at the Kenosha History Center’s 15th annual Chili Cook-Off on Saturday night at the Parkway Chateau, 12304 75th St.

The timing was impeccable for the organization’s primary fundraiser due to extensive flooding and ongoing repairs at the Kenosha History Center, 220 51st Place.

“We were dealt a tough hand last month with all of the rain and flooding at the museum,” said Chris Allen, Kenosha History Center’s executive director.

“All of the support we can get right now, we greatly appreciate it. The community has really come together over the last month to come out and help us with everything. That’s what it’s all about.”

The event was scheduled to take place at the Kenosha History Center and relocated to the Parkway Chateau.

Twisted Cuisine took home the People’s Choice Traveling Trophy and Judge’s Award for its traditional, sweet and spicy chili. The Kenosha Fire Department finished second, and Coffee Pot was third.

“The chili was fantastic,” Allen said. “Honestly, it was one of the toughest years we’ve had to pick a favorite. There were so many good ones.”

The event was boosted by one of its largest field of competitors in recent memory, according to Laura Tyunaitis, community relations manager for the Kenosha Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“There were some heavy contenders,” Tyunaitis said. “Twisted Cuisine seemed to be popular because of its sweet-spicy combo. It was a traditional beef chili with a little bit of sweetness thanks to some brown sugar, barbecue sauce and heavy cream.”

The Kenosha History Center remains open despite ongoing repairs, according to Allen.

The Southport Light Station Museum, 5117 Fourth Ave., is open for its final weekend of the season on Saturday and Sunday.
