Famous Dave’s of America, a national chain known for serving slow-smoked barbecue meats, has closed its Pleasant Prairie franchise restaurant at 9900 77th St., serving its last meal Sunday evening.

Officials were not immediately available to disclose the name of the Pleasant Prairie franchisee or to determine if that party also had other locations in the state.

It’s currently not known whether other Wisconsin locations will be closed this month. Famous Dave’s also has Wisconsin franchise restaurant locations in Appleton, Eau Clairie, Green Bay, Greenfield, La Crosse, Lake Dalton and in Wisconsin Dells, according to a company official.

The manager of the Eau Claire location said his franchise store has been successful and there are no plans to close. He said his store is one of a few owned by the same franchisee.

Kathy Johnson, the manager of the company’s Calhoun Square store in Minneapolis, said her restaurant continues to be a popular, successful location.

The closure comes as the Minneapolis-based restaurant chain has struggled to maintain financial stability by closing some of its under-performing company stores and selling off some locations to franchisees who hopefully could make a go of it under the branding banner and its overall reputation.

The company has said the strategy was designed to overcome “intense sales and profit pressure.”

The strategy has produced mixed results. According to the company’s end of year 2018 report, it currently only owns 17 restaurants.

Year-end financial results reveal that the company stores generated a 2.2 percent sales increase. Meanwhile franchise operations saw a 1.5 percent sales decrease.
